3 Things to Do if Youre Feeling Burned Out at Work - Hallie Crawford
3 Things to Do if Youâre Feeling Burned Out at Work Feeling burned out at work? Or maybe you feel overworked or bored? All professionals feel this way from time to time; itâs normal. Even if you love what you do (like we do), you can get tired of your job if it becomes too rote or routine. You need to keep your job fresh and challenging to remain fulfilled long term. Itâs important to mix things up every once in a while. Hereâs some advice to get you started: (For more tips on treating career burn-out by the way, download our free briefing here!) First, think about how you feel at your current job. What is causing you to feel burned out? It could be one of these reasons (if itâs not, add your own): You have been at your job, industry, or in your specific role for a long time. This can make your tasks become monotonous and easy, and make you feel less challenged or inspired. You are regularly asked to take on tasks that you donât enjoy and are tired of it. This could be anything from creating spreadsheets to assisting with company events. Your workload has increased. You do certain things well and are assigned more of those tasks, even if you donât want them. And you start to feel resentful. You have had major life changes. Perhaps your family has grown, and your values have changed. Do you identify with any of the above situations? These situations create negative feelings, and therefore negative results. Identify which of these negative results you are experiencing: You are bored, not challenged at work. You feel less effective. You have more work. Your coworkers think you have it easy, affecting your work relationships. Write down why you feel burned out, and what the results are. Once you have identified how you feel and the negative consequences of your feelings, what can you do about it? Consider the following tips. Take a step back. First of all, it is essential to make a personal assessment. Ask yourself why you started in your field in the beginning, what attracted you to your industry or position. Once you have rediscovered your passion, analyze what has changed that is causing negative feelings. It could be that you want different things out of life or your values have changed in your personal life. For example, one of our clients needed to place his father into a retirement home. He had so much trouble finding an acceptable one for him that he decided he wanted to have an impact in that space instead of IT where he worked. It could also be that you are feeling overworked in certain areas of your job. Perhaps there are certain tasks that you used to love, but now you do them too often and they have taken over your job. Get back to the basics with our Ideal Career Model. (To view our Ideal Career Model, click here). Our trademarked Ideal Career Model has been successfully helping clients for over 17 years. The Ideal Career Model is a guide to help you lay the foundation for your career. It covers important items such as: Fulfillment. This is the meaning or reward you get from your job- your values or sense of accomplishment. This is the most important building block to a successful career. Do you still have that meaning? Enjoyment. This is the extra stuff that you like to do and get to do sometimes, but itâs not the main part of your role. Itâs like the icing on the cake- things like traveling as part of your job or mentoring others. Do you have enough of these things? Strengths. These are your talents and skills. Are you using the strengths you want to use? Do you need to use other strengths to mix it up more? Experience. Looking at past experiences that you have enjoyed can give you clues to what you might need to change now. Education. Do you need to take a class to challenge yourself again or make yourself more marketable? Are you leveraging the education that you want to? Personality and Environment. Being authentic is critical to happiness and avoiding stagnation at work. Are you able to be yourself at your job? Are you in the right work environment, or is that whatâs making you stagnant? Perhaps there isnât enough career progression, or you arenât able to increase your skills. Compensation. Has this stagnated for you? Are you you so good at your job they think itâs easy and donât promote you or give you enough of a raise? Make a list of your top five. Take some time to reflect on the above questions related to the building blocks of your career. Make a list of the top five things that need to be different for you. For example: Reduce the time you spend on certain tasks. Change to working on a different team. Track your hours to correct the perception that you have it easy. Take a Strengthfinders assessment to demonstrate what you can bring to the table. Need a Resume for a Stay at Home Mom Returning to Work You dont get a second weg with your resume. Its important to immediately impress befhigung employers with your skills and values. Even though aresume is a crucial step to getting an interview, we dont always seek out experts to help us get it right.Youve got tons of skills, and leaving it up to a friend thats doing great in his/her career and is fab at English just doesnt cut it. Recruiters and hiring managers have to get through hundreds of resumes in a short time. Research shows they spend anywhere from just six seconds to a mere minute on a single resume. You dont want the type of resume that gets tossed.Avoid these 10 things if you want to get to the interview stage1. Are you listing your job as a stay-at-home parent?Mama, I know it isnt an easy job. Not many women can do it, and youve done a great job. The point of a resume is to get to an interview, and you need to show that your recent employment adds to your ability to br ing a company money and success.2. Are youputting all the juicy stuff in the top 1/3 of yourresume? We live in an attention-deficient age. The top third of yourresume is your key real estate. Use it wisely. If you dont get the employer interested in interviewing you in the top section of your resume, youll lose out.3. Are you embellishing the truth because you cant remember? It can be hard to remember all the ins and outs of our employment if weve been working as a stay-at-home parent. Dont embellish the truth. You may get caught in an interview or if the recruiter or hiring manager does any searching. Besides the chances of getting caught, you have your integrity at stake character is priceless. Low-ball it if you cant find out a way to source the information you need.4. Are youfollowing currentresume trends? The world of careers and recruitment moves fast. You dont need to include references available on request, your address (the city is enough), or employment with a start date mor e than 15 years ago. If you have a LinkedIn profile, which you should, make sure to include it in the header of your resume. A Jobvite social recruiting survey found that 93 percent of recruiters search your online profiles before they offer you an interview.5. Do you have too many words selling your skills? It takes skill, practice, and experience to understand what does and doesnt work on a resume. Writing a resume is your chance to show what you think, feel, and value about your professional life. I know caring for a little one can be taxing and we dont usually have time to reflect on our achievements, but try to aim for less than 23 words in a sentence. Make sure your key resume sentences are simple to understand and around 15 words.6. Have youlisted your duties?Recruiters want to see what youve achieved and how you added value to the company because this shows why you are right for the job. Client or customer growth, revenue increases, and budget savings are easy to quantify. Sh ow off those preciousresume diamonds by quantifying your accomplishments and duties.7. Are you missing specific skills?Classes, conferences, or any relevant certifications, professional affiliations, and language skills show that you actively engage in your professional development. These are great skills you cant afford to leave off your resume.8. Are you using the rightresume format?Using a functional resume tends to lead to Im hiding something as it doesnt include dates. The best type of resumefor you would be more of a combination between showing your skills and core proficiencies and a chronological format. Performance Requirements The CABs creation was approved by Army chief of staff Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker on May 2, 2005, to provide special recognition to Soldiers who personally engage or are engaged by the enemy. Warfare is still a human endeavor, Schoomaker said. Our intent is to recognize Soldiers who demonstrate and live the Warrior Ethos. The CAB, whose design features both a bayonet and grenade, may be awarded to any Soldier performing assigned duties in an area where hostile fire pay or imminent danger pay is authorized, who is personally present and actively engaging or being engaged by the enemy, and perfor ming satisfactorily in accordance with the prescribed rules of engagement, according to the specific eligibility requirements. The Global War on Terrorism and its associated operations will be the first era of conflict considered for this award, said Lt. Col. Bill Johnson, Human Resources Command chief of military awards. September 18, 2001, is the effective date for the new award.
