How to Decide Whether to Move for a Job or Not
How to Decide Whether to Move for a Job or NotHow to Decide Whether to Move for a Job or Not1Deciding whether to move for a job or notlage is a huge life decision that very few people take lightly, but rarely consider until faced with the prospect. Knowing how to decide whether to move for a job or not is essential before accepting an offer. The process of moving in and of itself is stressful, even if it is just across town. Accepting a job in a completely different locale can complicate the move further by requiring big changes not only for you, but your family and friends as well. Below are a few things to consider when faced with the decision to relocate or not to relocate for a job.Consider ALL Potential ChangesThe changes that occur will vary depending on whether you have a family, a significant other, or if youre on your own. However, no matter your situation, changes will happen. The Job You will experience new job duties and a new company culture. Is this your dream job and dre am company? Are the changes going to be something you are willing to adapt to?The Family If you have a family, there will be a change in schools and employment opportunities for your spouse. There could also be a difference in the availability of activities (art clubs, sports, volunteer organizations) that you and the family are involved in.The Location Depending on what you are used to and where you are going, there could be dramatic changes in climate, culture, and overall lifestyle. The community will also change, meaning a difference in local amenities, neighbors, friends, and family. Are you comfortable with making new friends and being distanced from family? The Finances Some jobs offer relocation expenses others do not. Knowing this ahead of time will help with housing, transportation of goods, and utilities. In terms of money, you also want to consider the cost of living in the location you are moving to.Future Employment in New LocationAnother big thing to consider is the em ployment opportunities in the area. Is the hiring company doing well and growing? If the job is not a fit, are there other opportunities for you to consider in the local area or is it a bad job market? Is relocating for another job something you are willing to do?Other Options Before Taking the PlungeIf you are not sure about moving for a job, consider opening up a discussion with the employer about flexible working arrangements. You could ask about a work-from-home job, either full-time or part-time. Another idea is working a compressed workweek and commuting to the office a few days a week. Another avenue to follow before committing to relocating is to arrange an on-site visit to the company and surrounding community to determine if the move would be personally and professionally worth it.When deciding to move for a job, dont be afraid to follow your instincts. If you know in your gut that this move is one that you want to make, go for it. However, if you are on the fence about th e move and the job, it may benefit you to consider your options further, such as asking to telecommute. If the company is willing to work with you and understands your reservations, be honest and willing to work with it. On the other side of the aisle, if the company is being overly demanding, it may not be the fit you thought it was.Readers, have you ever had to decide whether to move for a job or not? How to Get Your Boss to Respect Your Time Off - The Muse
How to Get Your Boss to Respect Your Time Off - The MuseHow to Get Your Boss to Respect Your Time Off I sat with my head propped up in my hand at one of those cramped hotel computer desks, listening to my boss ramble endlessly on the other end of the phone about something she needed- yet welches apparently unable to locate herself. My family stood eagerly by the hotel room door, trying their best to be patient while simultaneously gauging just how much longer Id be stuck there. Considering the fact that we were attempting to enjoy a family vacation, they were excited to get down to the pool- which was being delayed by yet another needless conversation with my supervisor.Heres the thing My manager knew I was out of the office. My email out-of-office message was turned on. We had an in-person conversation in bestellung to tie up loose ends before I left. And, to add insult to injury, she had personally approved my vacation request months ago. My absence wasnt a surprise. Yet, this boss of mine seemed to have absolutely no respect for my time out of the office. Shed send me emails over the weekend. When she was leaving work for the day, shed ask me to finish up one of her projects- even though it was already well past quitting time. And, as Im sure you saw coming, shed pop up with the ever-frequent phone call- even when I was on vacation. How exactly did I deal with it, you ask? Well, back then, my coping strategy involved a lot of grumbling and complaining- and not much else. But, if I could turn back time and to the whole thing all over again? Id be more direct about handling the situation by immediately sending her an email that followed one of the below templates- and then Id promptly join my family at the pool. If Youre Planning Ahead for Your Time OffHello Boss Name,Ahead of my upcoming time off from date to date, I wanted to be sure to touch base with you about my plans. In order to use that time to truly relax and recharge, Im going to unplug from work as much as possible. Of course, Im also happy to sit down with you ahead of my time away in order to confirm we have all of our bases covered before Im out of touch. Let me know if youd like to get a brief conversation on your schedule.Dont hesitate to let me know if you have any questions about this, and I really appreciate you allowing me to make the most of my time offBest,Your NameIf Youre Already Enjoying Your Time OffHello Boss Name,I wanted to reach out with a quick update for you.As you know, Im currently away from my desk until date. In order to make the most of my time off and return to the office feeling as refreshed and recharged as I can, Im aiming to disconnect from my work as much as possible. So, please be aware tha t- after this message- I wont be responding to any work-related emails or phone calls for the duration of my time off.If anything comes up in my absence, Contact Name is filling in for me while Im away and can assist with those issues or questions. Otherwise, Ill make sure to promptly address any other pending items when I return to the office on date. Thanks so much for understanding, Boss Name. I really appreciate you allowing me this time to relax and enjoy my time offBest,Your NameI get it- it can feel awkward to set the record straight with your boss about your vacation time (hence why I personally took the cowardly way out and just rolled over). However, know this Youre entitled to your vacation days, and youre more than justified in expecting them to be totally work-free.So, its well worth it to gather your courage and let your boss know what your expectations are for your time off. Unless, of course, you want to follow in my footsteps and sacrifice your well-deserved pool sess ion for an hour spent in the stuff hotel geschftsleben center. Take it from me- I dont recommend it.
